The initial unit for the 8th grade year centers around the summer reading novel. It is required to have this novel read before the first day of school.

9th Grade Honors English:

Students will choose one​ of the following books for summer reading and complete the book prior to returning to school in August.

The Secret Life of Bees​ ​by Sue Monk Kidd
Into the Wild​ by Jon Krakauer (non-fiction)

We highly recommend that students annotate the text as they read, paying special attention to the literary elements of setting, characterization, and conflict. Class discussion and activities will begin during the first full week of school.

9th Grade Advanced Honors English (Pre-AP):

Dickens, Charles. Great Expectations – Be prepared for a test on this book during the first week of school.

We will open the year with a study of this novel.
Foster, Thomas C. How to Read Literature Like a Professor —You should read and annotate this book carefully. You will be using this text through the rest of your career at SMMHS. I will collect your books the first day of school in order to grade your annotations.

Choice Novel Assignment​:
Choose one of the following novels and complete the choice novel assignment to submit to TurnItIn by August 1, 2018. You should choose two separate chapters from How to Read Literature Like a Professor, and write two separate paragraphs analyzing your book. Each paragraph should apply a chapter of How to Read Literature Like a Professor that you think is pertinent to your novel. Your paragraphs should be well-written, focused, and thorough with two quotes as examples from the text.
