Celebrations

  • Congratulations to our HS Girls Basketball team as they won the prestigious Best of Preps Tournament this past weekend!  Congratulations also to Olivia Koontz for being recognized as the Tournament MVP and to Jaylah Hardy and Lamiah Walker for earning All-Tournament recognition!  Great job, and congratulations to all!
  • Congratulations to our HS Boys and Girls Bowling Teams for their great seasons ending with a boys’ victory over Baylor and a 2nd place finish in the District Tournament and a berth in the upcoming Region Tournament!  Earning All-District honors were Jackson Cannon, Jensen Thompson, Landyn Sanders, and Jenna Underwood!  Congratulations also to Landyn Sanders as he had the district high average for the year of 183 and has qualified for the State Bowling Tournament and to Jackson Cannon as he had the 3rd highest district average while bowling the two highest games in the district this season with games of 266 and 267!
  • Congratulations to Mr. Hunsucker, Mrs. O’Brien, Ms. Wagner, Ms. Draper, Mrs. Vance, Mrs. Stewart, and Mrs. Manley as they were nominated by their peers for December’s staff award!
  • The Chattanooga Times Free Press will be accepting nominations for Teacher of the Month during the first two weeks of every month.  Winners will be announced on the second Friday of each month, so visit www.timesfreepress.com to nominate one of our amazing SMMHS teachers!
  • News 12 is starting up another season of Golden Apple reports. These stories honor some of the best, brightest, and most innovative teachers across the Tennessee Valley. Nominate a great teacher on staff today! Nominations can be made at the News 12 website, www.wdef.com, under the Golden Apple Award drop down box.

Information Items

  • HS Boys Soccer – The first workout for HS Boys Soccer will take place on Monday, January 13 right after school at 2:45.  All students must have their physicals submitted through Aribiter and these initial afterschool workouts typically start at 3:00 and go until 4:00 Monday through Thursday.  If you have questions, please contact Coach Goza.
  • HS Boys and Girls Tennis – Any high school boys or girls who are interested in playing tennis this spring will need to attend an informational meeting that will take place afterschool on Monday, January 13 at 2:45 in Ms. Mastin’s room.  Conditioning will begin on January 21 afterschool and all students must have their physicals submitted through Arbiter before participating.  If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Mastin.
  • MS Electric Go Cart Team – Practice and work meetings will start back on Monday, January 13 and will take place twice each week.  Please check Google Classroom for updates, and contact Mrs. Oliver if you have questions.
  • Winter Choral Performance Re-Scheduled – Our Choral Performance for our year-long middle and high school chorus groups that was re-scheduled due to weather will now take place on the evening of Tuesday, January 14 beginning at 7:00 at Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church.  If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Wiram.
  • MS/HS Card Club – Beginning next week, the SMMHS Card Club, formerly the MS Card Club, will now be open to all high school and middle school students who are interested in Magic the Gathering, Key Forge, and Pokemon.  The club meets on most Wednesdays and an occasional Thursday with the next meeting scheduled for Thursday, January 16 from 2:45 to 4:00 in Mrs. Bergren’s room.  If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Bergren.
  • David Flood HS Presentation – SMMHS is fortunate to have nationally-recognized youth speaker, David Flood, visit SMMHS for two HS presentations taking place on Friday, January 17 from 9:00 to 9:45 for students in grades 11th and 12th and from 10:00 to 10:45 for students in grades 9th and 10th.  Mr. Flood’s presentation will be focused on maintaining a positive school climate, being kind to others, and understanding our differences.  For more information about Mr. Flood, please visit topyouthspeakers.com.
  • MS Valentine’s Dance – The 6th grade is sponsoring the MS Valentine’s Dance on Friday, February 7 from 6:00 to 8:00 in the cafeteria and is in need of parent volunteers to assist with decorations, set-up, and food.  Tickets will be sold at the door only for $5 each and the dress is casual.  If you are able to assist, please contact Mrs. McGann-Womack at mcgann_jennifer@hcde.org.
  • Sports Boosters Red and Black Auction – The annual Sports Boosters Red and Black Auction will be taking place on Saturday, February 8 from 6:30 pm to 11:00 pm at the Westin Hotel.  All proceeds will benefit our SMMHS athletics teams with tickets on sale for $150 per couple or $75 in advance for a single.  To purchase tickets and learn more about the event, please visit www.gosmeagles.com.
  • Parent ManageBac Login Information – Emails providing information for parent logins for ManageBac (our online IB learning platform that allows students and parents to view class assignments and materials, messages, due dates and more) have been sent.  Please note that parents and students continue to access grades and assignment names in Power School.  If you did not receive an email, please email Mrs. Swan at swan_d@hcde.org or Mrs. Patton at patton_s@hcde.org.  If you have a question about ManageBac information for a specific class, please contact the teacher.
  • World Languages Tutoring – Tutoring for French, German, and Spanish has now begun and will take place on Tuesdays in Mrs. Geerlings’ room 2118 in the lower HS hall.  Tutoring with Ms. Meznar and Mrs. Geerlings will take place every Tuesday from 2:50 to 3:50.  French and Spanish tutoring will be available each week and German tutoring will be available every other week.
  • Learning Center Information – A reminder that our MEF-funded Learning Center provides afterschool tutoring Monday through Thursday from 2:45 until 3:45.  Tutoring is provided in most 6-12 subject areas and all students must be picked up by 3:45.  For additional information, please contact our Learning Center Coordinator, Abbey Duncan, at duncan_abbey@hcde.org.
