Bio

Shelby Walker is a native of Birmingham, Alabama and a graduate of Pelham High School where his band director was Mr. Jim Duren.  He attended the University of Alabama, where he was a member of the "Million Dollar Band," the Alabama Jazz Ensemble, Alabama Symphonic Band and the coveted Alabama Wind Ensemble, receiving the Bachelor of Science (Music Education - Instrumental) degree.

During his time at the Capstone, Mr. Walker held the privilege of performing with such names as:  Arturo Sandoval, Allen Vizzutti, Christian Lindberg, Birch Johnson, Gene Bertoncini, Eric Essix, Jean Pierre Rampal, Fredrick Fennell, Ransome Wilson, The Trans-Atlantic Horn Quartet, The Canadian Brass, The St. Louis Brass Quintet, and Guenther Shuller.  Mr. Walker also had the distinct honor of performing with the Dallas Brass as a freelance trombonist, as well as being under the baton of the late Gerald Welker, Frederick Fennell, Kathryn Scott, Kenneth Ozzello and Thomas Wolfe.  Mr. Walker is a graduate from the tuba studio of the J. Michael Dunn.  

Before accepting the position as Director of Bands at Signal Mountain High School, Mr. Walker has directed bands at McMinn Central High School in Englewood, Tennessee, Northridge High School and Hillcrest High School in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.  His duties as a High School Director include, but are not limited to, assistant director of the Middle School Band Program, Conductor of Symphonic, Jazz, Marching and Pep Bands, music arranger, drill designer, color guard, dance and majorette sponsor,  basketball public address announcer, Conductor of the Musical Theater Orchestra and faculty advisor for Tri-M Music Honor Society. 

As a performer, Mr. Walker serves as euphoniumist of the “Jericho Brass Band”, a British style brass band based in Chattanooga, Tennessee. As of the beginning of 2012, the Jericho Brass has performed over 400 concerts, making it one of the hardest-working bands in the world.  He is also a member of the Chattanooga Tuba/Euphonium Quartet, currently finalizing its first album set for release in late 2015.

Professional affiliations include, East Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association, National Association for Music Education, Tennessee Music Educators Association, Phi Mu Alpha Music Fraternity, Tubists Universal Brotherhood Association and Tri-M Music Society.

Mr. Walker enjoys Crimson Tide Sports, hunting, fishing, and GOLF. He currently resides in Signal Mountain, Tennessee with his beautiful wife Emily, daughter Bennett and son Whit.
